Personality:
Though all members of Chrom's Shepherds are unique in their own way, Henry is a character who just seems to stand out with optimism, cheerfulness and easygoing nature wrapped in a cozy bloodthirsty bundle. When he appears before the Shepherds he does so in a hurricane of crows while throwing puns left and right, the very nature of them making it difficult to determine whether he should be taken seriously as he goes on to demonstrate great skill against their Plegian foes. Though he does provide most of the comedy relief in Awakening, and most of it rather dark, there is more to him than just an ongoing gag – delve deep enough into his supports, and you start touching upon the sweet and caring Plegian's morbid and harsh past.

It is true enough that Henry likes to laugh and put up a smile around everyone, and even when he's alone. He finds humor in blood, death and violence, but if you begin to touch on the subject of pain he makes no attempt to hide his displeasure with it, even though he may still be gleeful over the sight of a bloody corpse. It is hinted that he suffered from severe discipline at the "wizarding school" he attended, which is more than likely a prison institution with the way he talks about the pain and experiments whenever his upbringing is brought up. His time there may have contributed to his hesitations and sympathy toward others regarding a dislike of pain, and may be partly responsible to the nerve damage and high pain tolerance he claims to have. It is, however, difficult to notice this when he is usually so light and cheery, rarely being offended by what others have to say. Not to say that he doesn't particularly care what a person close to him may think, he is wiling to do what he has to to keep such people happy, even if his ideas of what their happiness would entail would be considered ethically wrong, such as when he offers to start humanity's extinction because he thinks it would make Panne happy. She calls him an animal that needs to be taught humanity.

This is all likely a result of his dark upbringing. Neither of his parents particularly cared for him, raising him with neglect, and for a time all nurturing was left to a wolf he befriended who lived in the woods near his home, after he was briefly abandoned by his parents. It was her death at the hands of the villagers when she came to visit him one day that triggered one of the crucial points of his life, when in his anger he proceeded to kill a great number of, if not the entire village out of vengeance as he tells Cherche, and it may be the exact same incident he refers to with Miriel, though he claims he doesn't remember the incident very well. It is likely that he was sent to the institution right after, and it was there that his joy in death as well as his more submissive nature was nurtured. And Henry is rather submissive, he's willing to change some of his behaviors for the sake of others, but not so much that he'd change his character completely, as he states that he always follows orders unless they're stupid, such as "don't kill the enemy." But part of Henry is simply afraid to be alone and abandoned again, in the same way his parents did to him, and the result is that he attaches to people quickly, though he does tend to get along with others rather well and easily builds friendships despite his inability to understand humanity on various levels common among others. Because of the trauma of that, as seen in his support with Olivia most noticeably, it is implied that he is forcing himself to be happy as a means of coping and surviving, and has forgotten that it was an act somewhere along the way and genuinely believes he is a happy person through and through; it could be said that both his claims and the observations of others are true at the same time. When confronted with a situation where the object of his affections is being taken away, the smile will briefly fall and he will be left confused, pleading and even upset, such as when Cherche denies him being with Minerva.

Sometimes, this leads to a showing of how passionate he can be, a side of him that can catch others by surprise due to his cheerful and happy-go-lucky attitude. This isn't the only side to him that others find surprising, since he proves to be a close observer of others and is often aware of their capabilities, and sometimes he has good amount of foresight as shown when he chooses to serve the Ylissean army so that he could take part and help extend a perfectly fun war (or he's just dangerously genre savvy). For all he could be boasting about his capabilities as a powerful dark mage, he actually is quite humble and downplays his contribution, appreciating what others are capable or and even expressing excitement at being able to try some of the things the others do. At the same time, he can be bluntly honest and there are moments where his callousness shines, catching many people off guard in the same way his thoughtfulness does. Henry has a certain charm to him, and is actually quite good at comforting others in his own odd way while always willing to help them out with their problems as he does with Maribelle, even if his innocent suggestions can sometimes be macabre such as his initial solution to Lissa's sleeping troubles. All throughout this, Henry is aware that he has a few screws loose in his head, but is able to enjoy the simple and menial tasks of life. His outlook of life is rather the same way, in that social divides don't matter much to him in the end even if he is sometimes more polite toward authority figures.

Overall, he has a very pure heart and pure intentions, to the point that he can commune with anything living, and his behavior can even innocently childish sometimes, among them the desire to be an animal or turn into one because he admires their simple lives. Everything about him is simply layered with his special brand of schadenfreude, with the things that make him uniquely 'Henry.'

Abilities:
Henry is implied to be one of Plegia's most powerful mages, given he served alongside the army's high commanders and was slated to serve under Mad King Gangrel himself, and would have been fighting against the Shepherds if he had not been incapacitated. Tharja mentions that there were stories of his extensive knowledge of extraordinary curses and magic, the extent of which no one knows because he was always guarded by his crows. It's implied that he has the capability to kill dozens of people with these curses, as shown in his supports with Cherche and Panne while able to recognize when someone is affected and otherwise throw it back at the original sender or off completely and with ease (of course this would be affected to comply with Animus limits if not outright void). He has intense willpower, enough to eventually thwart Sully and likely a result of what he endured in his childhood, and is rather durable and well-rounded both in-story and in his own game stats, where he is sometimes so accustomed to pain he doesn't necessarily notice it right away or is able to brush it off (he says it's a medical condition, but who knows). He has the ability to communicate with anything as long as its living, be it his crow friends, maggots or even flowers as he explains to Maribelle. He has a very pure heart, but that doesn't always mean good things. And according to Gaius, he has good taste.

Contrary to what many others say, Henry wasn't minding the dangers of the Tower at all since he had arrived. He didn't deliberately go to seek danger, but those instances he had found himself faced with trouble he was able to dance away unscathed, if a bit tired at times. Some of these floors were quite the challenge, after all! They would provide prime opportunity to practice a few experiments and curses, which nobody seemed to object to event they even knew about it in the first place. Well, except for the floors where his abilities didn't work. Those were perhaps the most difficult times when he would have to grit his teeth behind the smile to get back out alive.

In a way, it was just like back in wizarding school, survive and prove that you can be useful or you're dead~. If he could just last long enough here, he could continue to have more fun blasting these enemies and watching out for the others of his world, though some of the floors he had encountered were quite worrisome, if anyone were to ask him for his opinion out loud. It was only during times like those that he would be even slightly disheartened, thinking of some of his friends back in their seemingly destroyed world. It was a bit lonely really, but they would all meet up again whenever they decided to arrive here. Until then he would survive just fine.

For now his primary concern was finding means of fetching more food. Stories say that the cafeteria might not always be the best option, and he did owe some folk an apology for what happened on the forty-ninth floor not long ago. In seeking the restaurant, he found himself tasked with a quest to fetch a woman's gown of all red from the eighty-third floor, and to wear it before turning it in. He had been here for hours already, having lost track of time all the while humming to himself, occasionally helping anyone who happened by and asked for his help before continuing his own quest.

After much digging through the sheer amount of clothing, a task that was exhausting in and of itself, he at last finds the gown he was searching for. It was rather frilly, but there was little hesitation as he begins to don it. Of course, this happened to be his first experience with the clothing of this floor...

"Gah! What the hey?" The sensation of the beating organs surrounding his body was not frightening, but it was unexpected and he nearly falls back into the pile of clothes he had been inspecting prior to finding the gown. It was uncomfortable for only a brief moment–as soon as he realizes what's going on, well... It's kind of nifty. The poor creature he wore though, but others needed to eat and someone else would have to wear this. Maybe he could come back again another time, but if he didn't get back to the restaurant within the hour, he might be in trouble.

"Sorry little guys, you'll have to go keep another person all nice and warm. Maybe they'll really like you and ask for more of your friends some other time."
